Announcing Mosaic Materials: Improve your Multi-Material Printing Experience

Ever since we first launched Palette, we have been focused on creating ways to give you the best multi-material printing experience possible. While a big part of this experience is the hardware and software, another crucial part of this printing experience is the material. This focus and strive for constant improvement is what has led to today’s release of Mosaic PLA Filament.

While Palette still remains open to all brands of filament, we cannot control the quality and repeatability of third-party filament. When it comes to some materials, companies sacrifice quality which leads to a poor Palette printing experience. Mosaic PLA has been specifically formulated for multi-material printing and tuned to print with Palette and Canvas. It’s quality filament without the premium cost.

When developing our filament, we placed a high priority on providing the most reliable and easy to use Palette experience. Our PLA filament is specifically designed for strong and consistent splices right out of the box.

 

Industry Leading 40-micron Diametric Tolerance Band

In order to ensure the most reliable printing experience, we have made sure that Mosaic’s filament is manufactured to the incredibly tight tolerances of 1.75mm +0.01/-0.03mm. This is on par with the highest quality filaments available, and of a significantly higher quality than standard +/-0.05mm filament. This ultra-tight tolerance means the most consistent printing quality and printed part dimensional consistency. In our experience, it is amazing what feeding top quality filament to your printer will do to your print quality.

We have torture tested Palette and our printers with our new material line, putting tens of thousands of splices through these systems in order to test quality and ensure consistency. Our quality management team brought in sophisticated testing equipment to ensure that the quality of material shipped out meets the required specifications.

 

Extended Palette Performance with Asymmetric Tolerancing

With a spec of 1.75mm +0.01/-0.03mm, we’re able to ensure more consistent splicing, fewer jams, and the most reliable Palette printing experience on the market. This approach to tolerance is unique to our filament and incredibly important to allow the most reliable and consistent Palette printing experience.

Inside each Palette is a Splice Tube made from PTFE. This tube tightly fits 1.75mm filament allowing for strong, consistent splices. When using third-party filaments (especially those with looser tolerances levels such as +/-0.05mm), the filament can jam inside this tube or cause it to wear out quicker. When the tube is worn, splices can break along the path to the printer or jam once they get into the extruder.

Through our testing, we’ve found that Splice Tube life with Mosaic’s PLA (+0.01/-0.03mm) is up to 60% longer than with loosely toleranced filament (+/-0.05mm). This allows for a much more reliable Palette printing experience.

 

Reliable Run-out Detection With Upgraded Spool Retention

Another useful feature unique to Mosaic PLA is the way it works with run-out detection on Palette and other printers. The filament has been attached to the spool specifically to allow it to detach easily leading to less wasted filament. Most filament companies loop the end of the filament into the filament spool creating a sharp bend that can cause run-out detection sensors to jam. With Mosaic’s approach to the spool attachment, run-out detection and correction will work as designed.
